Who is this course for?
Who is the SMSTS refresher course for? This is something we are asked a lot – and it’s a question we are well equipped to answer. The SMSTS refresher course is for those construction industry professionals who took the full SMSTS course less than 5 years ago, and want to refresh their knowledge and keep their certificate before it expires. If more than 5 years pass, then the full, 5-day course will need to be taken again – which will take up much more of your valuable time. This 2-day refresher will update your knowledge without going into too much unnecessary detail with the key concepts that you are already familiar with.
Those who take the course are managers, directors and surveyors who are responsible for planning, organising and monitoring a team on a construction site.
What will you cover?
The course is efficiently paced while covering all that you need to know to allow you to continue you in your role and serve your team members safely. During the course, you can expect to cover the following:
- The current focus of the Health and Safety Executive’s attention
- Risk assessment and method statements
- Construction Site Health, Safety and Welfare
- Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
- Behavioural safety
- Occupational health
- Overview and changes to the current legislation affecting construction.
The SMSTS course is highly interactive, and delivered through case studies and classroom discussion. You will take part in group work and individual or group presentations to further your learning, all under the expert guidance of your course leader. You will need to attend the full 2 days to complete the course successfully, and will be assessed with a multiple-choice test at the end. Upon successful completion of this, your SMSTS certificate will be renewed.

Overview
This SMSTS Refresher training course is delivered via a virtual Zoom classroom with a qualified trainer which will enable students to complete the course at home. The course timings will remain as normal and run for 2 days. The SMSTS Refresher course timings are 9am to 5pm.
All students attending the SMSTS Refresher Online Training course must be able to access a laptop or PC to complete the course work, registration forms and test. You must also have a webcam to join the SMSTS Refresher Class.
The official CITB SMSTS Refresher course books will be provided in a digital format for you to download.
Content
The CITB SMSTS Refresher Training course will cover the following content:

Requirements
All candidates must possess a good understanding of reading, speaking and writing English. This course will be carried out in English and as such, it is important that candidates can communicate in English.
Assessments & Renewals
Assessment:
The SMSTS Refresher course must be attended in full for the 2 days. The exam for the SMSTS Refresher training is multiple choice with written answers as well.
In order to pass the SMSTS Refresher, candidates must achieve 80% in their exam. If candidates score less than this, they may be able to re-sit another exam subject to meeting the required marks. We offer FREE resits for candidates who need to retake the exam only.
Renewal
The SMSTS Refresher Course Certificate is valid for 5 years and can be renewed with a 2-Day refresher course to maintain the qualification for another 5 years.
