Who is the SMSTS Course For?

First of all – who is the SMSTS course for? Well, this course has been put together with site managers, agents and quantity surveyors in mind, although construction and project directors will also benefit hugely from what the course covers. It’s known within the industry as the ‘next step’ for anyone looking to take on a more senior role within their organisation, or building on the skills that they have already gained in their role. So, if you are or are going to be responsible for a number of people on site and needs to plan, organise and monitor their output in full compliance with UK health and safety regulations, this is the course for you.

What does the course include?

What does the SMSTS course include? It’s one of the most comprehensive health and safety courses available today, and you will cover so much when you take part. You will learn everything there is to know about the enforcing health and safety code of practice onsite, and why it is so important to carry out regular risk assessments. You will also discover how to identify, monitor and control hazards that are commonly seen within the construction industry.

You will cover the following during the course:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations
  • Risk assessments/method statements
  • Recent changes in accepted working practices
  • Behavioural safety
  • Management of occupational health
  • Electricity
  • Excavations
  • Working at height
  • Scaffolding
  • Demolition
  • Confined spaces

Delegates will learn through examining case studies, taking part in classroom discussion and group work, along with individual or group presentations. Some self-study will be required outside of the course, and this is something that your trainer will discuss with you. You’ll need to attend all 5 days of the course. At the end of the course, you will take a multiple-choice test. Upon successful completion of this, you will be prevented with a certificate that is valid for 5 years.
