Preparing for a new role

You don’t have to be already working in a managerial or supervisory role to take the SMSTS course. If a more senior role is something that you are working towards, then taking the SMSTS course now could really improve your career prospects. Whether you are looking to progress within your current organisation or are looking for an entirely new job, having the skills and knowledge you have gained from the SMSTS course under your belt will show an employer that you are ready to hit the ground running and deliver great results.

What will you cover?

What will you learn during an SMSTS course? During your five days of learning, you will cover the following key concepts:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations
  • Risk assessments/method statements
  • Recent changes in accepted working practices
  • Behavioural safety
  • Management of occupational health
  • Electricity
  • Excavations
  • Working at height
  • Scaffolding
  • Demolition
  • Confined spaces

You will learn through case studies, classroom discussions and group work, along with individual or group presentations. You’ll need to do some studying outside of the course, as well as completing all 5 days of the training. At the end, you will take a multiple-choice test to show what you have learned.

Is the course mandatory?

Is the SMSTS course mandatory? This is something that we are asked a lot. The answer is that no, it isn’t, but it is a course that we highly recommend taking. It is endorsed by BuildUK and the majority of construction sites within the UK will require their site managers to have it. So if you don’t take the course, you could be shut out of exciting career opportunities and left with no room for progression. For just 5 days of your time, you could gain so much!
